The Fighting Fifth is one of the most heralded regiments in all of U.S. history. According to legend, it was the Battle of Belleau Wood during WW1 when the Marine Corps earned the name of Devil Dogs from the Germans, who were futile in repelling the sixth assault by the newly formed regiment in 1917. As a result, the French gave rise to their legend by designating the Belleau Wood as the Wood of the Marine Brigade. It’s no surprise that the mottos for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions were also born from the trenches: “Make peace or die,” “Retreat, Hell!” and “Get Some.” Some of the best mottos, slogans, and especially slang, come from our military.
